| Initiative Foundation Announces Grant Recipients |

JANUARY GRANTS: The Initiative Foundation announced that it has awarded 8 community grants totaling $28,850. The following organizations were selected as grant recipients:
Brainerd Lakes Area Development Corporation; National Development Council (NDC) Training ($2,000) - to support a training program that will help participants to develop and finance affordable home ownership and rental housing development plans. Contact: Sheila Haverkamp, (218) 828-0096.
Cass County Economic Development Corporation, Backus; Strategic Planning Session ($1,200) - to support the creation of an on-line survey and consulting services for a three year strategic plan. Contact: Gail Leverson, (218) 947-7522.
Center for Service-Learning and Social Change, St. Cloud; Follow-up Action to the Social Justice Conference with Youth ($2,000) - to conduct follow-up activities with youth who attended a recent conference on social justice. Contact: Kevin LaNave, (320) 259-5480.
City of Pine River; Small Cities Development Program Grant Preparation ($1,650) - to provide support for consulting services in order to prepare a grant application. If received, the grant will provide financial assistance for safe, affordable housing, economic development and public facility needs. Contact: Jim Sabas, (218) 587-2440.
Housing & Redevelopment Authority of St. Cloud; Downtown High Tech Initiative ($3,500) - to support the St. Cloud's Downtown Council research projects for business redevelopment. Contact: Bruce Theilman, (320) 252-0880.
Long Lake Improvement District (Isanti County); Curlyleaf Pondweed Management ($5,000) - to assist with treatment and evaluation of management techniques for this invasive exotic aquatic plant. Contact: Robert Shockman, (763) 444-4232.
Pine River Area Sanitary District; Rural Wastewater Options ($10,000) - to support an evaluation of wastewater treatment needs in order to help community members make informed choices about effective, affordable treatment options. Contact: Scott Warner, (218) 838-2014.
Renewing the Countryside, Minneapolis; Minnesota Homegrown Legacy ($3,500) - to support a "networking opportunity" for area farmers to meet with chefs, buyers, and food service institutions seeking locally grown produce. Contact: Jan Joannides, (612) 251-7304.
The Initiative Foundation seeks projects that strengthen central Minnesota communities and address barriers to economic development. Inquiries for applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and are generally reviewed within 14 days of receipt.
JANUARY LOANS: The Initiative Foundation, in partnership with other lenders, provides funding to locally-owned businesses. The foundation focuses on start-up or expansion ventures that reinforce local economies and create quality jobs with living-wages. Recently, the following businesses were selected as loan recipients:

DECEMBER GRANTS: The Initiative Foundation announced that it has awarded 25 community grants totaling $128,500. The following organizations were selected as grant recipients:
Bemidji State University; Walker Health Care Consortium ($5,000) - to create a multi-media assessment tool so that assisted living facility employees can better serve their residents. Contact: Kerry Ross, (218) 755-4900.
Benton-Stearns Education District, Sartell; Self-Help Parent Support Group ($2,500) - to support a positive parenting program for parents of preschool children. Contact: Mary Ann Backes, (320) 257-7356.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota, St. Cloud; Youth Leadership Program ($3,000) - to support up to 700 youth involved in the Junior Volunteer, Career Development and Torch Club activities. Contact: Mark Sakry, (320) 252-7616.

Central MN Task Force on Battered Women, St. Cloud; Aftercare Services Program ($10,000) - to support a VISTA volunteer as they develop and implement an advocacy program for battered women and their children who have used shelter, support or referral services. Communities Investing in Families, Stanchfield; East Central Financial Literacy Project ($5,000) - to support program costs for providing More Money-More Sense Financial Literacy training where participants learn about credit reports, steps to improving credit scores, predatory lending and budgeting.
