The Initiative Foundation has provided grant funds to hundreds of organizations and communities, including Royalton to help with sustainability planning and clean energy projects.

The Initiative Foundation exists to improve the quality of life and to build stronger communities within its 14-county region of Central Minnesota by offering leadership training, business loans, nonprofit grants and donor services. Since 1986, the Initiative Foundation has invested more than $70 million in the region through targeted grants and business financing investments.

2013 Innovation Fund Grant Awards

728 Cadets, Inc. - Elk River Area Marching Band Scholarships and Percussion Improvements: $2,100 to provide support for student scholarships and percussion upgrades, increasing program accessibility for area students and improving the overall musical experience.

A Place for You - Pine City Homeless Shelter Improvements: $3,900 to support a series of infrastructure upgrades to the 113-year-old building where the shelter is housed, improving structural integrity, usage of space and exterior appearance.

AccountAbility MN - Central MN Technical Assistance and Training: $2,500 to deliver the Career Development Program, designed to empower youth in gaining valuable work skills to obtain further employment.

Adult Day Services Inc - Walker Program Expansion: $5,000 to expand the supportive services provided to Adult Day Services clients in the Walker area by increasing days of operation, offering additional transportation options and expanding therapeutic services that enable adults experiencing physical and/or cognitive challenges to remain living semi-independently in their homes.

Allina Associated Foundation - Cambridge Area Reach Out and Read Early Literacy: $7,500 to provide books to children (ages 6 months to 5 years) at their “well child” visits, thereby providing a foundation for early literacy and enhancing school preparedness. 

Allina Associated Foundation - New Emergency Department: $7,500 to support the advancement of a new emergency department at the Cambridge Medical Center.

American Cancer Society - Annual Golf Sponsorship: $250 to support the 2013 golf tournament fundraiser.

Amherst Wilder Foundation - 2013 MN Healthy Communities Conference: $1,000 to sponsor the 2013 “Building on What Works” conference which will showcase a collection of successful joint projects by community development, health and other practitioners to improve the health residents and communities across the entire state.

Anderson Center - Scholarships for Executive Training: $10,000 to increase accessibility to high-quality training that supports new and expanding businesses in greater Minnesota. 

Animal Humane Society - Animal Care at Coon Rapids Location: $1,000 to support animal care and adoption operations.

Annandale Area Community Team - Community Field Day Event: $2,500 to organize and carry out a community field day event to share the lessons learned during the Healthy Communities Partnership (HCP) process and carry out an updated visioning session to begin the next phase of local community and economic development.

Anoka County Humane Society - Animal Care: $1,000 to support operations and volunteer efforts.

Anoka Ramsey Community College Foundation - Evan Stein Scholarship: $1,000 to support a scholarship in memory of Evan Stein.

Arc Midstate - Technology Planning for St. Cloud Area Nonprofit: $3,000 to participate in MAP for Nonprofits' technology assessment and planning program which includes a comprehensive organizational IT assessment, recommendations for IT improvements, and a staff development analysis. This is a project of the Initiative Foundation’s Thriving Organizations Partnership program.

Arc United Inc - Technology Planning for St. Cloud Area Nonprofit: $1,000 to work with a MAP for Nonprofits technology consultant to assess and identify technical requirements, equipment needs and management of IT assets related to the organization’s website. This is a project of the Initiative Foundation's Thriving Organizations Partnership program.

Baldwin Township - Phase II Healthy Community Partnership Plan: $10,000 to move into phase two of implementation of the Baldwin Township Healthy Communities Partnership plan.  Priorities include completing a comprehensive plan, creating a business association or chamber, and park and recreation development.

BestPrep - Minnesota Business Venture for Students: $2,500 to provide scholarships to a residential summer entrepenuership program at St. Cloud State for high school students from Central Minnesota.  Students spend a week with businees leaders in order to learn about business, leadership, career options and financial literacy.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central MN - College Bound - Developing Leaders for Life: $5,000 to provide support for college preparatory program which includes a “Tool Kit for College” workshop, development of individual college prep plans, coordination of college visits, a trip to the National College Fair, financial aid application assistance, scholarship research and more. The program is designed to help youth realize that post-secondary education is an option and to make smart choices about their life and future.

Boys & Girls Club of the Leech Lake Area - Cass Lake Club Junior Staff: $10,000 to support the 2013 Junior Staff program that offers paid employment and critical workforce training opportunities to low-income teens in the Cass Lake area.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central MN - Career Development Program: $5,000 to provide support for Career Launch, Junior Staff and Goals for Growth programs, designed to empower youth in gaining valuable skills and experience for college and career readiness.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central MN - Operating Support: $1,000 to support youth programming and mentorship activities.

Brainerd Baxter Youth Center - Planning and Support for The Shop: $10,000 to support The Shop's programs for disadvantaged youth, as well as a comprehensive planning process for sustaining the organization.

Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Education Association - 2013 Awards Event: $1,000 in recognition of the Initiative Foundation’s “Outstanding Nonprofit” Award.

Brainerd Lakes Area Economic Development Corp - Information-Technology Sector Support: $10,000 to support IT business retention and attraction to the region (including recruitment of skilled workforce). In addition, the EXECs project will offer the services and expertise of veteran private sector executives to review and offer counsel to area businesses on emerging opportunities, challenges or projects.

Brainerd School District - Early Childhood Love and Logic Parenting: $1,000 to support four “Love and Logic” parenting classes through the Early Childhood Family Education outreach. Certified Love and Logic instructors offer practical and effective techniques for gaining family cooperation, and for identifying steps for  raising responsible and respective children.

Brainerd School District - Families Reading Every Day (FRED): $500 to support the FRED program offered at the Crow Wing County Jail to promote father involvement, children’s literacy and quality father-child relationships.

Brainerd School District - Early Childhood Coalition - Cradle to Career Project: $10,000 to develop strategies to enhance children’s social and emotional readiness for school, and to strengthen their existing relationship with the Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, including partnering with pilot businesses to encourage employee participation in early childhood literacy and reading programs.

Bridges of Hope - Operating Support: $1,000 to support the operations of Bridges of Hope.

Bridges of Hope - Operating Support: $500 to support the general operations of Bridges of Hope.

Cambridge Community College Foundation - Cambridge Scholardazzle Fundraiser: $1,000 to support annual Scholardazzle event. 

Cambridge-Isanti Dollars for Scholars Foundation - Higher Education Scholarships: $1,000 to support higher education scholarships.

Cass County Economic Development Corporation - Wood Pellet Market Analysis: $2,000 to work with a consultant to complete a market feasibility study to determine potential local buyers for wood pellet products, both as an energy source and/or as animal bedding.

Cass County Economic Development Corporation - Backus and Longville Small Cities Grant Preparation: $1,200 to prepare a DEED Small Cities grant application that would assist the communities of Backus and Longville with a combination of housing and business rehab projects in each city.

Cass County Economic Development Corporation - Wood Pellet Market Analysis: $2,000 to work with a consultant to complete a market feasibility study to determine potential local buyers for wood pellet products, both as an energy source and/or as animal bedding.

Cass County Economic Development Corporation - Backus and Longville Small Cities Grant Preparation: $1,200 to prepare a DEED Small Cities grant application that would assist the communities of Backus and Longville with a combination of housing and business rehab projects in each city.

Cass County Economic Development Corporation - Update Strategic Plan: $1,500 to secure a facilitator to assist with reviewing the vision, mission, goals and strategies associated with retaining and attracting skilled workers and quality jobs to Cass County.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud - Homeless Youth Shelter: $10,000 to provide start-up operating support for a transitional house for homeless youth in the Greater St. Cloud area.

Center for Nonprofit Excellence & Social Innovation (CNESI) - Support for Emerging Nonprofits in Greater St. Cloud: $10,000 to engage and support emerging nonprofits, specifically immigrant-led organizations, as they develop their infrastructure and programs to meet the needs of their communities. 

Central Lakes College Foundation - Student Housing Study: $5,000 to evaluate existing affordable rental/student housing options in the Brainerd Lakes Area and to prepare recommendations to guide public and private investments in the community.

Central Lakes College Foundation - Living Legacy Gardens Picnic Shelter: $1,200 to support upkeep and updating of the Legacy Garden picnic shelter.

Central Lutheran Church - Food Distribution: $1,000 to provide match funds for the Central Lutheran Church Food Distribution program.

Central Minnesota Boys Choir - Voyageur Choir Collaborative Concert Trip: $1,000 to enable the Voyageur Choir to travel to Elk River to perform a collaborative concert with the Land of Lakes Choirboys.

Central MN Community Foundation - Greater MN Fight for a Cure: $2,000 to support Greater Minnesota Fight for a Cure via the Central Minnesota Community Foundation.

Central MN Community Foundation - Good Samaritan Fund: $250 to support one-time financial assistance efforts for Central Minnesota families in need.

Central MN Habitat for Humanity - TOP Financial Resiliency through Social Enterprise: $10,000 to advance the goals developed during participation in the TOP Financial Resiliency through Social Enterprise program.

Central MN Sustainability Project - Market Gardens: $5,000 to deliver the Market Gardens Project, designed to support apprenticeships for new Americans and other low-income or marginalized communities who will grow produce for sale under the mentorship of a Master Gardener. This project will provide land access, farming and business education, and support to apprentices, generating earned income for the organization and the apprentice.

Central MN Sustainability Project - TOP Financial Resiliency through Social Enterprise: $10,000 to advance the goals developed during participation in the TOP Financial Resiliency through Social Enterprise program.

Child Care Choices Inc - TOP Financial Resiliency & Social Enterprise Program: $10,000 to advance the goals developed through participation in the 2013 Thriving Organizations Partnership (TOP) Financial Resiliency and Social Enterprise program.

Child Care Choices Inc - Parent Aware Outreach in Child Care Providers: $5,000 to provide technical assistance, business planning, and coaching to help providers understand how to best demonstrate quality care and achieve high rankings under this new state program. Child-care providers that demonstrate improvement in rankings can help secure sponsorships to assist income eligible families afford quality care.

Children’s Law Center of Minnesota - Youth in Foster Care Legal: $5,000 to support recruitment and training of local volunteer attorneys and youth service workers in best practices for assisting at-risk, homeless and foster care youth, to engage area legal firms in recruiting volunteer attorneys and to raise awareness of judges regarding the value of youth participating in decisions that affect their lives and those of their families.

Christians Reaching Out In Social Service - Housing Assistance Fund: $2,600 to provide matching funds for the expansion of CROSS’s Peace of Mind Housing Program,  providing emergency housing support in the form of rent or mortgage payments to prevent families from losing their homes in times of crisis.

Church of St. Dominic - School of St. Dominic Operating Support: $500 to provide support for the operations of the School of St. Dominic.

City of Avon - Business Retention and Expansion: $3,000 to work with regional and local partners to identify the business retention and expansion needs of local businesses and to identify sites and other resources to meet those needs. This grant will establish an ongoing program that will continue to work with businesses each year utilizing local staff and volunteers from the business community.

City of Big Lake - River Oaks Park and Trail Plan: $2,500 to produce a plan for the development of River Oaks Park and a connecting trail that will guide future development and funding  efforts

City of Braham - Northwest Park Design Project: $3,500 to support the development of a design and engineering plan for the building of a pincic shelter structure in the Braham Nothwest Park. This facility will support community gatherings and enhance physical fitness for residents of all ages.

City of Brainerd - Mississippi Riverfront Design: $10,000 to develop a plan to better connect the Mississippi River to the Brainerd community utilizing a citizen-led, Center for Rural Design-assisted planning process that will include an overview of the opportunities for recreation, housing redevelopment and environmentially sound commercial development along the river as it passes through the community.

City of Brainerd - Legal and Technical Assistance for Wausau Paper Site: $10,000 to assist with expenses associated with assessment of assets and risks associated with the potential sale of this shuttered mill facility.

City of Chisago - Farmers’ Market “Thriving Future”: $3,500 to expand and enhance the Chisago City Farmer’s Market and to partner with Chisago Lakes High School to create entrepreneurial and training opportunities for youth. An initial project will involve youth-directed construction of a brick oven for baking healthy and nutritious pizzas featuring local ingredients which will be sold at the market during the coming summer.

City of Clearwater - Youth Engagement: $5,000 to support engaging youth and adults in the greater Clearwater area in piloting youth activities and gathering input that will lead to the further planning and implementation of an area community center and expanded youth programs.

City of Foley - Greater Foley Area Thriving Communities Project: $2,500 to deliver the Thriving Communities Initiative program to the greater Foley area including team training, technical assistance, resource referral and $2,500 to cover local meeting costs of community engagemnet.

City of Holdingford - Economic Progress Projects: $10,000 to implement community economic development by opening a local museum, expanding public gardens and art, developing a town square , atttracting new businesses  and increasing the use of the existing community center for all ages.

City of Howard Lake - Economic Development Project: $10,000 to strengthen the economic development of Howard Lake through organizing the new chamber,  training chamber leadership, marketing the industrial park and completing a detailed retail area analysis. This grant was supported by a gift from the Xcel Energy Foundation.

City of Jenkins - Master Park and Open Space Plan: $3,500 to develop a master park and open space plan that is consistent with the priorities established  in the comprehensive plan to increase recreational opportunities for all ages.

City of Little Falls - Public Input for Community Collaboration: $3,500 to support the process of gathering community members and organizations and facilitating a conversation that will lead to a common vision and plan for improving the quality of life in the greater Little Falls area.

City of Long Prairie - Rally for GoldStar Veteran Survivors: $2,000 to  join with volunteers from veterans organizations in the greater Long Priarie area to assist them to operate a multiple-day event that will raise funds to provide services to families that have lost a loved one in combat while serving in the U.S.  Military.

City of Longville - Thriving Community Implementation: $1,000 to support Thriving Communities Initiative-related projects for youth activities, invasive species control and park development.

City of Milaca - Community and Economic Development Projects: $10,000 to form and activate the Milaca Community Action Team as a local community service organization that will keep projects moving forward through developing and implementing a comprehensive volunteer recruitment and management strategy.  The organization  will focus on  economic development and enhancing the quality of life in the greater Milaca area.

City of Milaca - Band Shell Project: $15,793 to support the Milaca Bandshell project.

City of Nisswa - Highway 371 Treeline Restoration: $1,500 for restoration of a tree line along Highway 371 in Nisswa that was cleared for road construction.

City of North Branch - Economic Development Data Collection: $2,000 to  compile current demographic and local business enterprise data in a partnership between the North Branch Economic Development Authority and the Chamber of Commerce.  This data will allow more effective marketing to new businesses, as well as lay the ground work for a business retention and expansion program for existing businesses.

City of Pierz - Extrication Equipment: $1,000 to provide support for the purchase of a rescue saw and training on its use.

City of Pillager - Feasibility and Analysis for Tax Forfeited Land: $3,200 to retain professional assistance to explore engineering, financial and housing needs and opportunities that should be considered in determining the best use of tax-forfeited lands within the city limits.

City of Pine City - Regional Housing Study: $1,500 to participate in the East Central Regional Housing Study in order to determine current housing stock conditions across a seven-county area.

City of Remer - “Thrifty, Nifty and New” Thrift Store: $2,500 to help draw shoppers to downtown Remer, provide an affordable outlet for used clothing and household necessities and serve as a workforce training site.

City of Rockford - Business Plan for Crow River Food Cooperative: $3,000 to assess the financial feasibility of a start-up food cooperative in Rockford.  The community of Rockford has identified the restoration of grocery shopping opportunities as a cornerstone of downtown revitalization efforts.

City of Rush City - Thriving Communities Initiative: $2,500 to deliver the first phase of the Thriving Communities Initiative program to the community of Rush City, including core team training and the local cost of promoting and holding a community meeting to review and comment on core team plans.

City of Sartell - Medical and Business Park: $10,000 to retain a consultant to help area businesses survive the disruptions associated with Highway 15 reconstruction and to engage the public and private sectors in planning and “placemaking” for this growing professional/commercial neighborhood. 

City of Staples - Leaders Partnering to End Poverty Community Picnic: $500 for a community picnic on National Night Out with the intent of bringing our communities together to do community-building exercises while participate in National Night Out activities for an estimated 100-200 participants.

City of Staples - Leaders Partnering to End Poverty Community Picnic: $500 to co-sponsor with the Staples Motley Area Community Foundation a picnic for the Staples and Motley communities to bring people together around issues related to poverty in their community.

City of Staples - Staples Area Teen PULSE Lock In: $2,000 to support the Teen PULSE New Year’s lock-in event.

City of Taylors Falls Economic Development Commission - Phase II River Walk Expansion: $5,000 to provide for the expansion of the successful Taylors Falls River Walk, building the community through healthy activity, protecting key natural resources and increasing economic activity in and around the city.

City of Wadena - Wadena Regional Wellness Center: $1,226,590 to support post-tornado construction of a new Wadena Regional Wellness Center with designated funds raised by a local fundraising committee.

The following organizations were awarded grant funding during October, November and December 2014:

  • Rose Country Dental, Inc. - Pillager Early Childhood Dental Project: $4,000 to provide preventative dental education, resources and dental supplies for Early Childhood providers and families with children ages 0-5.
  • Saint Cloud State University - Community Engagement by School of Public Affairs: $5,000 to provide applied research to businesses, nonprofits and the public sector, including expertise in the areas of economic development and community planning, market analysis, criminal justice and entrepreneurial education.
  • Bridges of Hope - Improving Human Services in the Brainerd Lakes Area: $5,000 to enhance client services in Crow Wing County and surrounding communities by assessing current organizational procedures and designing new, complimentary electronic processes targeting efficiency.
  • Center for Nonprofit Excellence & Social Innovation (CNESI) - CNESI Innovation Summit: $1,500 sponsorship support for CNESI's annual Innovation Summit.
  • SPROUT MN - Local Foods Projects in the Brainerd Area: $1,500 to identify best practices in Planning and Zoning regulations to support local food systems in rural communities. A graduate researcher from the University of Minnesota Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) will work with Region 5 Development Commission and the Central Region Sustainable Partnership to prepare recommendations.
  • Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Education Association - 'Buy Local' Research & Development: $5,000 to identify successful strategies for supporting local purchasing efforts and adapt these to best fit the needs and opportunities of communities in Crow Wing County.
  • Cloverleaf Youth Partnership dba Cyber Cafe - Wadena Area Youth Programming: $5,000 to provide capacity-building and program support for the Cyber Café, a safe, chemical-free space with supportive programming for area youth.
  • Great River Family Promise - Elk River Area Aftercare Program: $5,000 to provide support services to families for up to a year after they leave the transitional shelter.
  • HOWA Family Center - Northern Cass County Kinship Expansion: $5,000 to support expansion efforts of current Kinship Youth Mentoring program.
  • Amherst Wilder Foundation - Data Analysis for Central Minnesota Communities: $5,000 to maintain and enhance Minnesota Compass, a website which presents summary statistics and tracks and analyzes trends in areas that affect the quality of life in Greater Minnesota.
  • Higher Ground Church - Central Minnesota Food Solutions Strategic Planning: $1,500 to offset costs associated with developing a comprehensive strategic plan for the Central Minnesota Food Solutions project.
  • Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity - 25th Anniversary Three Home Brainerd Build: $5,000 to support volunteer coordination and site preparation to enable Habitat to build three homes to mark its 25th anniversary.
  • Minnesota Council of Nonprofits - Central Minnesota Nonprofit Strengthening Initiative: $2,500 to support capacity-building and networking opportunities for nonprofit organizations in the greater St. Cloud area.
  • Lakes & Pines Community Action Council Inc. - Central Minnesota Community Asset Workshop: $2,250 to convene agencies and program participants to identify strategies for improving support for low-income households in Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs and Pine counties.
  • West Central Initiative - Minnesota Council on Foundations: $250 to share sponsorship of the annual Oct. 30-31 conference in St. Paul. The Minnesota Council on Foundations is an affinity groups which  expands and strengthens  the community of grantmakers who advance the common good.
  • Great River Greening - Little Falls Environmental Career Field Project: $4,000 to deliver a program that exposes high school students to careers in the forestry and natural resource fields through hands on outdoor work experiences.
  • City of Hewitt - Comprehensive Plan: $2,000 to create an up-to-date comprehensive plan that includes citizen input.
  • Annandale Area Community Team - Community Center Feasibility Study: $2,500 to complete a study on the feasibility of raising the capital to build a community center in Annandale.
  • Second Harvest North Central Food Bank Inc - Kids Packs to Go for Cass & Crow Wing Counties: $5,000 to provide nutritious food packs to children who are at risk of hunger during long weekends and school vacations. Some 12,735 food packs will be distributed at nine schools in Cass and Crow Wing Counties.
  • Central Minnesota Council on Aging - Supporting Aging in Place: Health and Wellness Initiative: $7,500 to host a series of health screening opportunities in Sauk Rapids, St. Joseph, Waite Park and Sartell, a wellness fair at the Whitney Senior Center in St. Cloud, and a variety of classes, organized activities for active seniors.
  • Boys & Girls Club of the Leech Lake Area - Outreach and Recruitment of New Donors: $5,000 to support the development of a strategic plan to cultivate new donors, host receptions and otherwise explore and develop the base of local support for this critical program which provides after-school programming for children and young adults in the Cass Lake community.
  • Rivers of Hope - Adult Advocacy for Sherburne and Wright Counties: $5,000 to deliver the Adult Advocacy Program for adult survivors of domestic violence, empowering them to promote positive changes for themselves and their children.
  • Paul Bunyan Arboretum - Youth Internships: $5,000 Operation Grow and Learn is an educational and work-based program which supports youth with disabilities by providing job skills training and community service opportunities. Volunteer participation includes teaching and supervision by master gardeners, faculty from Central Lakes College and members of the Northland Arborteum.
  • Lakes Area Interfaith Caregivers - Support Services for Seniors: $5,000 to support LAIC's varied services that help seniors age in place safely and happily.
  • Pillager Family Council - Community Needs Assessment: $5,000 to conduct a study identifying community needs and assets to help chart future direction for Family Center programs, services and facility development.
  • Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest - Entrepreneurial Growth and Development in Little Falls: $3,500 to implement programming in Little Falls and to expand youth entrepreneurship programs in the Central Minnesota region to develop high school students' financial and economic literacy and college and career readiness.
  • Staples Motley School District - Staples Motley Reality Store: $1,000 to support a day of educational role-playing to teach high school juniors and seniors about financial decision-making. 
  • St. Cloud Area Somali Salvation Organization - Preparing Immigrant Students for College: $4,750 partnering with immigrant parents and College Link to support the successful transition of these new students into schools within the St. Cloud School District as they begin to prepare for college.
  • United Way of Central Minnesota - Assessing Potential Solutions to Homelessness: $7,500 to work with the St. Cloud State University School of Public Affairs to assess the size and impact of homelessness in Greater St. Cloud and to identify potential programs or models to help families experiencing loss of housing.
  • Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota - St. Cloud Area Circle of Parents: $2,500 to provide weekly support groups for parents to educate them in positive parenting and healthy conflict resolution that will help break the cycles of dysfunction and instability.
  • Saint Cloud Area School District - Talahi Elementary School - Early Childhood Literacy: $5,000 in response to the fire at Roosevelt School in June 2014. Talahi Elementary school will purchase a quality collection of books for children ages 3-5. The selection of books is designed to increase kindergarten readiness literacy levels by 15 percent.
  • Mille Lacs Health System - Onamia Area - Early Literacy Initiatives: $7,500 to address early literacy skills in a high poverty school district by offering family literacy nights and field trips, Reach out and Read (a medical based early literacy project), Dolly Parton Imagination Library and summer "literacy intensive" school readiness classes for children ages 4 and 5.
  • Pillager Family Council - Home Visiting - Pillager, Pine River-Backus, Remer-Longville: $12,860 to support staff in obtaining 'The Healthy Families America' designation, an affiliation process that includes an accredited home visiting program that will elevate positive early childhood outcomes for the children and families served.

  • City of Foley - Today's Initiatives, Foley's Future: $20,000 to provide support for the implementation of projects that came out of the Foley Thriving Communities Initiative Program.  Areas of work will include increasing social interaction and civic involvement; transportation safety; downtown revitalization; business retention and expansion; exposing youth to job opportunities and skills development; and the promotion and expansion of recreational opportunities.
  • Roosevelt & Lawrence Area Lakes Association - Woods Bay Conservation Project Near Emily: $1,250 to develop promotional materials to raise funds for establishing an easement on sensitive land in the Emily/Outing area.
  • Leech Lake Area Watershed Foundation - Fisheries Habitat Protection: $1,500 to support a graduate student intern to use Geographical Information System mapping to identify areas of high value tullibee fisheries habitat and integrate this information into prioritizing areas for land conservation and protection.

  • City of Elk River Economic Development Authority - Finance Professional Certification: $1,250 to provide support for the city of Elk River Economic Development staff to attend the National Development Council's Economic Development Finance Professional Certification Program.
  • City of Elk River Economic Development Authority - Upper Midwest Economic Development Course: $500 to provide support for the city of Elk River Economic Development Authority staff to attend a comprehensive educational experience on the theory and practice of economic development fundamentals, which is accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

  • Verndale School District - Enhanced Career Counseling: $10,000 to support outreach by two career advisors coordinated by Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (CEP) to work in 13 high schools within the region (Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena Counties). Additional funding for this project is provided by the Otto Bremer Foundation.
  • Boy Scouts of America - Central Minnesota Council Inc. - Explorer Post Expansion for Todd, Wadena and Morrison Counties: $4,000 to  partner with school districts and local businesses to establish career exploration and mentoring  opportunities through the Boy Scout Explorer Post program.
  • Staples Motley School District - Community Park Development: $2,500 to plan and develop a community park on school property with elements that appeal to families and young teens.
  • Community Legacies Foundation, Inc - Sauk Centre Splash Pad Park Project: $5,000 to develop a  trail system connecting a community park that includes a splash pad as part of the larger community park system.
  • Tool Shed Inc - Support for Women in Need: $2,500 to develop a system of support for mothers caught in the cycle of addiction, poverty and incarceration in seven Central Minnesota communities.
  • Crow Wing County Housing and Redevelopment Authority - Brainerd-Nisswa Housing Study for Military Veterans: $5,000 to support a feasibility study analyzing the need and opportunity for a housing development specifically for veterans and active military service members and their families.
  • Morrison County - Strategic Planning: $2,000 to facilitate discussions with the board, community leaders and industry experts to address pending transitions within county staff, and to identify long-range strategic plans focused on the health, safety and welfare of all those served by the county.
  • Pine River-Backus Family Center - The Working Together Coalition's 'Be the Change' Event: $2,000 to support a two-day professional development event designed to guide and invigorate a comprehensive action plan focused on community-wide health improvement and substance abuse prevention.
  • Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota - Employment Training and Education: $5,000 to support a program which develops workforce skills valuable in call centers and customer support.  Many participants in this program experience significant barriers to employment, and those that complete the training typically gain living-wage jobs.
  • Saint Cloud Area School District - Supporting Children with an Incarcerated Parent: $5,000 to sponsor the work of the “Central Minnesota Inside Out Connections Coalition,” which works with volunteers and professionals to ensure that children and families have the resources to navigate issues which occur when a parent or caregiver is absent due to incarceration.
  • Casa Guadalupe Multicultural Community - Re-Establishment of Food Shelf in Cold Spring: $5,000 non-capital costs associated with site cleanup and preparation of a regional food shelf projected to serve more than 1,400 people in 2014.
  • Industries Incorporated - Expand Training and Employment Opportunities: $5,000 to assist adults with disabilities to successfully engage in the workforce. The program will collaborate with local businesses to build organizational capacity and strengthen employee core skills.

Innovation Fund Grant Awards

4th Quarter 2015 Grant Awards

  • Community Grassroots Solutions - Connects Women to New Careers in St. Cloud Area: In partnership with local organizations, Community Grassroots Solutions (CGS) will use its $5,000 grant to host four informational sessions to help immigrant and refugee women access key employment resources through the regional Job Placement Program.
  • Great River Family Promise - Elk River Area Aftercare Services: $4,000 to support follow-up case management and the provision of various support services for families for up to a year after they have transitioned out of the emergency shelter program.
  • Tool Shed, Inc. - Transition for Incarcerated Women in Morrison County: $2,500 to support the expansion of counseling, education and resource referral programs to help female inmates successfully transition back into communities and stay out of prison.
  • Central Lakes College Foundation - Aligning Workforce Training and Manufacturing Needs: $10,000 to support engagement of manufacturing sector employers, workforce training professionals and higher education representatives to identify the best models for providing quality, affordable and convenient training required to help enhance the skills of future of future and existing employees. This project builds upon the work of the Advanced Manufacturing Education Alliance, which includes Central Lakes College (Brainerd), Pine Technical College (Pine City) and St. Cloud Technical and Community College.
  • Bridges of Hope - Brainerd Lakes Area Storm Relief: $5,000 to establish a fundraising challenge to secure local donations to meet the needs of low-income individuals affected by the July 2015 wind storms that struck the Brainerd lakes area.
  • Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Education Association - Lakes Proud Buy Local Campaign: $5,000 to establish a challenge match to help secure $10,000 in additional pledges to support education and promotion of a campaign to encourage local businesses and residents to strengthen the local economy by buying from businesses based in Brainerd, Baxter, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Breezy Point, Crosslake, Crosby, Deerwood and Ironton.
  • Northland Foundation - Grantmakers for Effective Organizations: $1,667 to share sponsorship of the May 2-4 Minnesota Council on Foundations conference with the other five Minnesota Initiative Foundations.
  • Crow Wing County United Way - Get Connected Volunteer Recruitment: $2,500 to provide support to launch the Get Connected online volunteer recruitment and management platform to increase volunteer services across Crow Wing and Southern Cass county.
  • Tri-County Action Program Inc. - Free Tax Preparation in Greater St. Cloud: $3,000 to provide free tax preparation to low-income individuals and families in the St. Cloud area.
  • Oasis Central Minnesota Inc. - Strategic Planning & Professional Development in Morrison County: $2,500 to meet strategic planning and professional development needs.
  • Brainerd Baxter Youth Center - PC's for People Project: $5,000 to advance community support and develop internal tracking systems for the PC's for the People (PC4P) Youth Project that teaches local at-risk youth IT literacy skills and returns refurbished computers to income-qualified homes in the community.
  • Second Harvest North Central Food Bank Inc. - Kids-Packs-to-Go for Cass & Crow Wing Counties: $4,000 to provide nutritious food packs to children who are at risk of hunger during long weekends and school vacations. Approximately 12,735 food packs will be distributed to 1,415 children at eight schools in Cass and Crow Wing counties.
  • RESOURCE - St. Cloud Area Skills for Success Program: $4,000 to deliver Skills for Success program, which provides technical skills training to bridge employment gaps for disadvantaged immigrant and refugee community members.
  • Goodwill/Easter Seals Minnesota - St. Cloud Area Employment Training and Education Program: $4,000 to support comprehensive financial/call center job skills training for participants with various barriers to employment.

  • Perseverancia - General Operating Support: $1,000 to serve Central Minnesota Latino communities. The primary goals are to connect Latino communities in the region with culturally appropriate services and resources. The grant is made in recognition of the service of Mayilu Bales on the Initiative Foundation's board of trustees.
  • Central Minnesota Community Foundation - Community Pillars Initiative/Social Capital Survey: $7,500 to co-sponsor a partnership with the St. Cloud State University School of Public Affairs to administer a survey of Greater St. Cloud residents to assess community and social connectivity as a key measure of regional assets and challenges, and to retain Diane Hageman and Greg Vandal to support facilitation of the efforts associated with the Community Pillars projects.
  • GiveMN - Online Giving Portal: $1,667 to support administrative costs associated with the annual GiveMN fundraising campaign which benefits Minnesota nonprofit organizations.
  • Economic Development Partnership or Wright County - Marketing and Site Selection: $5,000 to identify land available for development and promote business development and expansion opportunities in Wright County.
  • Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation - 2016 Talent Summit: $575 to provide sponsorship for a Jan. 21 event that provides an opportunity for businesses to attract local talent, thereby strengthening the Greater St. Cloud Community.
  • Saint Cloud State University - 54th Annual Winter Institute: $500 to provide sponsorship for the Feb. 10-11, 2016, economic development gathering, which this year focuses on the "Community Wellness" theme.
  • Minnesota Council on Foundations - Annual Support: $4,450 to support advocacy for and promotion of ethical and responsible charitable giving, maintain resources for grantmaking, creating and sharing information for and about grantmakers.
  • Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation - 2015 Innovation Summit: $5,000 to provide support for the Oct. 9, 2015, summit, which featured nine TED-like talks about innovations taking place in our nine Community Pillars.
  • Morrison County Social Services - Early Childhood Community Liaison: $5,000 to increase the capacity of school districts and other partners in Morrison County to provide leadership and support to families with the early learning scholarship application process and to employ a leader who will plan, prepare and implement trainings required for early childhood staff to maintain the four-star rating status of Parent Aware.

  • Greater Twin Cities United Way - Start Early Funders Coalition: $1,000 to provide annual support to the Start Early Funders Coalition which represents 26 members of Minnesota's philanthropic community who each provide critical leadership for funding, research, program development, public policy and grant making to improve early childhood efforts in Minnesota.
  • Mille Lacs Health System - Onamia Early Childhood Coalition - Panthers' Little Libraries: $7,500 to increase quality and accessibility of young children's literacy materials and activites by strategically placing free little librarties in locations where families with young children visit.
  • Saint Joseph's Medical Center - ACEs Interface Training - Brainerd: $500 to support two-day Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) workshops for up to 30 participants.
  • Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota - Circle of Parents - St. Cloud Area: $3,500 to provide a free weekly support group for parents who may be in danger of abusing or neglecting their children.
  • Regents of the University of Minnesota - Tourism Planning in Morrison County: $2,000 to assist the county and and its cities in reviewing their existing Comprehensive Plan, tourism assets and trends in visitation to best position the area to capture visitor revenue.
  • Pine County - Comprehensive Plan Update: $5,000 to support citizen engagement and public input in the development of a new Countywide Comprehensive Plan. The first major update since 1993 will help integrate land use policies with the new Economic Development Plan completed by the County in 2014.
  • Central Lakes College Foundation - Small Business Assistance in Central Minnesota: $10,000 to support consulting services to provide assistance in business plan development, loan application preparation, financial projection analysis, market feasibility assessments and other business growth guidance.
  • Wright Technical Center - Career Exploration and Entrepreneurship for Youth: $3,000 to support the expansion of the Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) program in Wright County by connecting high school students to area business leaders and mentors.
  • Saint Cloud State University - Technical Assistance to Somali Entrepreneurs: $5,000 to support increased investment of technical assistance to meet the needs of New American entreprenuers. In particular, the Small Business Development Center will retain a part-time consultant to provide marketing, financial literacy and other key business start-up skills tailored to the needs of Somali business people.
  • Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians - Northern Minnesota Tribal Economic Development Summit: $1,000 to sponsor a 2015 gathering to support cooperative initiatives that retain and grow economic potential of the Leech Lake, White Earth and Red Lakes Bands of Ojibwe.
  • Lakes & Pines Community Action Council Inc - Economic Gardening in East Central Minnesota: $12,000 to provide staff support for five businesses to participate in an Economic Gardening program, which helps participants focus on strategic growth challenges such as developing new markets, refining business models and gaining access to competitive intelligence.

3rd Quarter 2015 Grant Awards

  • African Women's Alliance - Greater St. Cloud Area Healthy Smile Program: $4,000 to recruit and engage new immigrant/refugee families needing dental services. This grant will support African Women's Alliance in expanding its partnership with Children's Dental Services to offer oral health education and dental care in the St. Cloud area.

  • Bridges of Hope - Community Database and Referral System: $5,000 to provide partnership support for a community-wide database and referral system that will be used by nonprofit organizations across Crow Wing and Southern Cass Counties to reduce duplication and increase support for children and families in need.
  • Central Minnesota Community Foundation - Create CommUnity Annual Operating: $5,000 to sponsor the Annual Conversation on Race and provide other general operating support. Create CommUNITY works in Greater St. Cloud to create a welcoming, non-discriminatory community which encourages respect and opportunity for all.
  • St. Cloud Area Somali Salvation Organization - St. Cloud Area Youth Development: $2,500 to support the development of Somali youth in the St. Cloud area through mentoring and after-school activities.
  • United Cerebral Palsy of Central Minnesota - Central Minnesota Program Expansion: $3,500 to enhance services for vulnerable individuals and families affected by the challenges of living with a disability and to implement a transition program for current clients.
  • City of Cambridge - Livable Community Project: $4,000 to work with the Minnesota Design Team to engage citizens and to develop downtown design concepts, plans and drawings that will lead to a more livable and vibrant community.
  • Central Minnesota Housing Partnership - Organizational Capacity Building for Affordable Housing: $7,500 to assist rural communities with the construction or rehabilitation of affordable housing.
  • Happy Dancing Turtle - The Art of Resilience, TEDxGullLake 2015: $2,500 to sponsor a Bainerd Lakes Area TEDx event with regional speakers discussing how innovation, adaptation, creativity and resilience will shape the future of Central Minnesota.
  • Cambridge Isanti School District - Child Care Outreach Program - Literacy: $7,000 to create partnerships among school-based early childhood education, in-home child care providers and child care centers to strengthen literacy and kindergarten readiness for children birth to age five.
  • Brainerd Lakes Area Economic Development Corp - Tech Services Initiatives: $10,000 to help position the Brainerd Lakes Area as a high-technology sector hub with access to high-speed internet, skilled workers, vibrant businesses and a spectacular quality of life.

2nd Quarter 2015 Grant Awards

  • Saint Cloud Area School District - Central Minnesota Inside Out Connections: $6,000 to provide technical assistance to Kanabec and Mille Lacs counties to revitalize their Inside Out Connection coalitions (a project to support children of incarcerated parents); to coordinate a regional training; and to update the Caregivers Guide: How to Explain Jails and Prisons to Children, a publication of the Initiative Foundation.
  • Wadena County - Early Childhood Dental Health Education & Awareness Initiative: $7,000 to work in collaboration with the Early Childhood Coalition to share best practices on how to connect with young children and their families to provide dental education and outreach.
  • Wright County Health and Human services - Early Childhood Dental Outreach: $1,000 to offer a variety of dental care outreach activities to increase oral health for children in Wright County communities.
  • African Women's Alliance - Early Childhood Oral Health Education & Treatment: $5,000 to educate refugee and immigrant families on best practices in oral health, and provide dental services to families in need St. Cloud.
  • Isanti County - Early Childhood Dental Project: $5,000 to establish and promote a partnership with Children's Dental Services in Cambridge.
  • Rise Inc. - St. Cloud Area Transportation Fund: $5,000 to provide transportation and other support services to help secure and maintain employment for previously incarcerated individuals and those with mental health disabilities in the St. Cloud area.
  • Salem Lutheran Church - Organizational Expansion in Crow Wing County: $5,000 to support staff and resources to continue the growth of Salem WEST and expand partnership efforts with Bridges of Hope allowing them to more efficiently serve Central Minnesota communities.
  • Crow River Trail Guards Inc. - Paynesville Area Youth Leadership Development: $2,500 to support a program that helps youth develop essential job and life skills.
  • All Parks Alliance for Change - Manufactured Home Preservation: $5,000 to support education, advocacy and grassroots organizing efforts for income-eligible families living in manufactured housing communities.
  • City of Becker - Highway 10 Transformation Project: $5,000 to develop a vision and framework to guide the transformation of the Highway 10 Corridor into an attractive, vibrant, sustainable place to shop, live, work and entertain.
  • Soup For The Soul, Inc. - Expanded Accessibility for Mora Area: $2,500 to provide transportation for community members to access complimentary weekly meal program.
  • LegalCORPS of Saint Cloud - Legal Support for Central Minnesota: $3,000 to provide legal support and training to small businesses and nonprofits in Central Minnesota.
  • Community Aid of Elk River (CAER) - Car CAER Vehicle Repair: $5,000 to provide minor car repairs and new tires to income-eligible families, eliminating barriers to maintaining transportation that impacts their employment, health and well-being.
  • Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe - Support for Early Childhood Care: $1,000 to provide food and facilities for Minnesota Tribal Resources for Early Childhood Care (MinnesotaTRECC), working to strengthen the childcare delivery system for Native American children and families.
  • City of Emily - Downtown Redevelopment Plan: $2,500 to create a plan to improve the appearance and functionality of downtown including lighting, walkability and improved business access.
  • Mille Lacs Health System - Early Childhood Dental VISTA Project: $2,500 to address dental health issues among young children in the Onamia area, most of whom live in low-income households. This is a new project which will utilize a summer Volunteers in Service to America member (VISTA).
  • Central Minnesota Taskforce on Battered Women - Emergency Housing and Advocacy Services: $5,000 to connect victims of domestic violence with services and resources to stabilize their living conditions, achieve and maintain independence, and lessen dependency on their abusers and public programs.
  • Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans - Direct Assistance for Central Minnesota Veterans and Families: $2,500 to provide assistance to Central Minnesota veterans so they can remain in their homes,  access basic needs, gain employment and help homeless veterans obtain housing of their own.
  • Open Doors for Youth - Programs for At-Risk Youth in Elk River Area: $4,500 to support the startup of a new resource center for homeless youth, designed to provide basic needs and resources to become self sufficient.
  • Community Aid of Elk River (CAER) - Summer Youth Food Program: $5,000 to support the expansion of CAER's Kid Kitz supplemental food program in the Otsego area, serving more than 850 income-eligible children each summer.
  • Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe - Early Childhood Dental Outreach: $8,000 to provide dental services to Head Start children who are currently overdue on their initial dental exams.
  • Hands Across the World - Partnering with St. Cloud Area Businesses: $5,000 to provide mentoring and hands-on training to English Language Learners (ELL) interested in acquiring specific employment skills in sewing manufacturing, in-home childcare and janitorial industries.
  • Mille Lacs County - Broadband Connectivity Study: $5,000 to determine the feasibility of running fiber to Mille Lacs County facilities in an effort to meet current statewide connectivity speeds.
  • Albany School District - Career and Technology Education: $1,000 to provide supplies to help ensure that local High School students are prepared for their future careers with the best technology and tools possible. This grant is made in recognition of Midsota Manufacturing, the Initiative Foundation's 2015 Outstanding Enterprise award winner.
  • Community Aid of Elk River (CAER) - Support for Gift Anonymous Project: $1,000 to help area families who are financially unable to provide holiday gifts for their children. Last year the program provided gifts to 726 children and 277 families. This donation is  in recognition of the Chuck Christian family in recognition of their 2015 Outstanding Generosity award from the Initiative Foundation.
  • Pine City School District - Dragon Wagon Early Childhood Literacy Project: $1,000 to support local efforts to provide access to age-appropriate books and educational toys for early learners (ages 0-5) in Pine County. This award was made in recognition of the Pine City Area Early Childhood Coalition as the Initiative Foundation's 2015 Outstanding Community award winner.
  • Leech Lake Tribal College - Tribal College Foundation: $1,000 to support student scholarships and special projects that serve the educational, community and personal development and workforce needs of the community of Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. This grant is made in celebration of the Leech Lake Tribal College's recognition as the 2015 Outstanding Nonprofit by the Initiative Foundation.
  • Minnesota Council of Nonprofits - Strengthening Nonprofit Organizations in Central Minnesota: $1,000 to provide annual support to this statewide affinity group which provides resources, training and information to help nonprofits do their jobs better.
  • United Way of Central Minnesota - St. Cloud Rox Baseball Early Literacy Day: $2,000 to promote the value of reading to young children and to distribute up to 250 books to families with a child ages birth to 5.
  • Brainerd School District - Brainerd Lakes Area Early Childhood Coalition: $11,000 to continue "Cradle to Career" work in collaboration with local businesses addressing the social-emotional needs of young children; provide Adverse Childhood Experiences training; pilot a common pre-kindergarten assessment; and offer Love and Logic parenting classes.
  • Dreams United/Sueños Unidos - Building a United and Prosperous Long Prairie: $7,500 to build unity across a diverse ethnic community to improve the declining Central Avenue business district.
  • City of Montrose - Mixed Use Development Project: $2,500 to redevelop land adjacent to Highway 12 into a mix of housing and commercial-use opportunities.
  • City of Longville - Economic Development and Park Enhancement Projects: $7,500 to promote and expand local business opportunities and improve park facilities. These projects were identified and developed through the Initiative Foundation's Thriving Communities Initiative program.
  • Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota - TOP Financial Resiliency through Social Enterprise: $10,000 to advance the earned-income business development goals created during participation in the TOP Financial Resiliency through Social Enterprise program.
  • Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed District - Rapid Response to Aquatic Invasive Species: $16,000 to employ a new treatment protocol developed by the Big Marine Lake Association to maintain herbicide concentration at the level required to kill Eurasian watermilfoil, an aquatic invasive species. This project is funded with support from the Outdoor Heritage Fund as approved by the Minnesota Legislature.
  • Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District - Reduction of Invasive Rusty Crayfish Project: $42,000 to intensively trap rusty crayfish, reduce the potential source of re-infestation from adjacent infested locations and encourage the practice of catch and release of smallmouth bass. This project is supported by the Legacy Outdoor Heritage Fund as recommended by the Minnesota Legislature.
  • Carver County Water Management Organization - Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Project: $40,000 to establish a tagging system that provides outbound boaters at the Lake Minnewashta access with a proof-of-inspection tag allowing them expedited future lake access if the tag is still intact. This project is funded by the Outdoor Heritage Fund as recommended by the Minnesota Legislature.
  • Regents of the University of Minnesota - Research Assistant for Aquatic Invasive Prevention: $5,000 to assist Dr. Mae Davenport in providing technical assistance to local units of government, watershed districts, tribal entities and nonprofit organizations that are advancing innovative strategies to prevent the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in Minnesota. This project is funded by the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council as recommended by the Minnesota Legislature.
  • BestPrep - Entrepreneurial Training for Youth: $5,000 to provide scholarships to a residential summer entrepreneurship program hosted at St. Cloud State University and Saint John's University for high school students from Central Minnesota.  
  • First American Financial Services on behalf of WCEDA - Showcasing Wadena County on the Internet: $5,000 to support an effort by Wadena County Economic Development Alliance in creating an interactive web-based map of key amenities and businesses to highlight quality of life, attract skilled workers and draw attention to the region's fiber broadband in Wadena County.
  • City of Big Lake - Strategic Planning for Economic Development: $2,500 to assist the Economic Development Authority in strategic planning, including stakeholder engagement, establishment of benchmarks and tools for tracking progress.
  • Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation - Technical Assistance for Small Businesses: $5,000 to support the provision of technical assistance for small businesses and provide training on the range of new technologies available to support area businesses.
  • Metropolitan Economic Development Association (MEDA) - Support for Central Minnesota Small Businesses: $5,000 to provide one-on-one assistance to approximately 100 regional businesses to identify market opportunities and contracts through governmental offices and prepare competitive bids or proposals.

  • Salem Lutheran Church Crow Wing County Inside Out Connection: $1,000 to reassess and reactivate the Crow Wing County Inside Out Connection (IOC) project that supports children of incarcerated parents.
  • Saint Cloud Area School District Inside Out Connections Project: $1,000 for a community event to increase coalition membership and involvement in workforce and youth development to support children of incarcerated parents.
  • Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Dental Education for Head Start: $4,000 to educate children, Head Start staff and parents on proper oral health care.
