Foundation Finishes in Wellness Challenge Top 10

June 29, 2017

The Initiative Foundation earned a Top 10 spot as one of the most active companies in the small business category of the national On the Move Company Challenge.

On_The_Move_Top-10.pngDeveloped by the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA), the effort partners with organizations around the country to take a stand for more movement and improved cultures for employee wellbeing. The On the Move challenge has been shown to cut sedentary behavior in half and create a groundswell of support for more physical activity during the workday. Eighty-four companies representing more than 85,000 employees participated in this 12-week online challenge spanning April, May and June 2017.

Nearly 75 percent of the Initiative Foundation’s staff participated in the challenge and helped drive the team to a 9th place overall finish in the small business category.

"The On the Move challenge was wonderful for our organization," said Matt Varilek, president of the Initiative Foundation. "Because it's inclusive and accessible for everyone, it built community and camaraderie through the team."

The challenge engaged employees with educational resources, video coaching, social support and, of course, movement. Employees tracked their activity types, duration and intensity to work toward 100 “Move points” each day. Taking in metrics like intensity and activity type, the On the Move algorithm allowed participating organizations to encourage employees to truly move when they wanted, how they wanted, and how much they wanted to reap all of the rewards of an active lifestyle. More than 80 percent of employees who complete the challenge each year say they will continue to be active in the long term.

“On the Move was designed to build a culture for more movement into an organization,” said Ryan Picarella, president of WELCOA. “Traditional wellness program challenges do not zero in on culture change or connect employees with ‘whys’ for being active that matter to them—so we created something that did.”
