Nelson Joins Initiative Foundation Board of Trustees
January 25, 2019
Matt Varilek, president of the Initiative Foundation, announced today that Julie Nelson of Mayer, Porter & Nelson certified public accountants, Staples, has been appointed to the Foundation's Board of Trustees.
"We're lucky to have leaders like Julie in our region, and I'm thrilled to welcome her to the Initiative Foundation's distinguished Board of Trustees," Varilek said. "Her expertise as a CPA, and her experience as a long-time advisory board member for one of our Partner Funds, the Staples Motley Area Community Foundation, make her an exceptionally valuable addition to our board."
Julie Nelson grew up in Brandon, near Alexandria, Minn., and has been a champion for rural Minnesota since moving to the area from Cottage Grove with her husband Kevin and three children in 1999. She quickly became involved with the Staples Motley Area Community Foundation, a Partner Fund of the Initiative Foundation.
"My dad always told me to get involved and have a hand in getting things done rather than watch from the sidelines," Nelson said. "I am honored to have been considered for the Initiative Foundation board."
Nelson believes one pressing regional issue she can help tackle is the shortage of workers, especially in rural Minnesota.
"I hope to be a voice for rural Minnesota," she said. "There is a great quality of life here, and anything I can do to connect people and other resources to Central Minnesota will be a win."
Nelson said she enjoys the open spaces in rural Minnesota. In her free time, she likes to read, paddle board, and bike and hike through Minnesota's state and county parks.
